While the Wimbledon Tennis may be over, there is still a busy summer of sporting events to look forward to and, with the help of Aggreko, The 2014 Ryder Cup is expected to reach over half a billion homes and 183 countries worldwide in September.

In addition to the millions watching at home, the event attracts visitors from across the globe. The Gleneagles site will include a tented village, hospitality units, a media centre and 40 different major temporary structures – all of which require power and air conditioning. Aggreko will power all of these elements and also provide 17 MW of power and back-up support on location.

Aggreko have provided temporary power and temperature control  for other major sporting events such as the nine Olympic and Paralympic Games, five FIFA World Cups and powered four previous Ryder Cups in Europe and The XX Commonwealth Games. 

“Aggreko has vast experience of providing temporary power and temperature control solutions at golf tournaments,” said Angus Cockburn, interim chief executive officer of Aggreko. “Doing so at The 2014 Ryder Cup, which is on our doorstep and is perhaps higher profile than any previous tournament, is a great privilege.”

With any sporting event, it is essential that the power supplies are as quiet as possible, which is why Aggreko plan to use their “super-silent” TwinPack generators. In addition, with such a high volume of broadcasting, around 600 distribution boards will be utilised to connect and feed power supplies around the course, allowing journalists the technical power to share pictures across the globe. 

A team of around 50 technicians are already on site and will remain in place for some three months until the entire site is disassembled.  

“Aggreko is yet another global business with firm Scottish roots to join us at The 2014 Ryder Cup,” said Edward Kitson, match director of The 2014 Ryder Cup. “Their expertise and experience at previous sporting events, both at golf tournaments and others with international broadcast power requirements, will be invaluable.” 

The 2014 Ryder Cup takes place at The Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland from 26-28 September, 2014.
