EXCLUSIVE – GL events Seating and Stadia has been busily installing grandstand seating in Sochi, with less than two weeks to go until the inaugural Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix. 

On 12 October, Sochi, home to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, will host the event. 

The circuit is being built around the Olympic Park coastal region, with GL events providing five raised grandstands, offering 30,000 seats with sight lines of the entire track. 

“The circuit is going to be very fast and technical, and offers a number of interesting features,” said Hermann Tilke, who designed the track. “It is a fantastic facility with a great atmosphere, and it will be outstanding, as the circuit runs through Olympic Park.” 

The Sochi circuit is the third-longest on the F1 calendar, coming in at 5.9 kilometres (3.7 miles) long. With 12 right and six left-hand corners, the cars are expected to fly around the track at maximum speeds of 320km/hour, with an average lap speed of around 215km/hour. 

“With grandstand positions at turns one, two, four, five and six, spectators won’t miss any of the action as the sight lines around the circuit are excellent,” said GL events Seating and Stadia operations director Chris Mansell.

Developed by GL events for the London 2012 Olympics, the grandstands are fitted with the C-View Plus Seating System. Three of the five stands are also fitted with disabled platforms to meet best practice for accessibility. 

“If the race is as good as the view,” added Mansell, “it will be one hell of a race.”
