Germany scooped five gongs at the fifth annual European Festival Awards on 15 January, including Berlin Festival winning Best Line Up, held at Groningen’s De Oosterport in The Netherlands. The Best Indoor Festival was won by Germany-based Metal Hammer Paradise, while Melt! Festival won the award for Best Medium-sized Festival.

Festivals in Eastern Europe also proved a force to be reckoned, with Serbia’s EXIT Festival, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary this year, winning the Best Major Festival Award.

B.my.Lake in Hungary took the Best New Festival award and FUSION Festival in Romania won the Best Small Festival trophy.

Arctic Monkeys won the award for Headliner of the Year.

This year the winners were decided by a combination of public votes and the European Festival Awards jury – made up of journalists, booking agents, and festival organisers, who had a 25 per cent say in the final outcome of the public voted categories. More than 620,000 votes from festival fans from all over the world were cast.

“Festivals are immensely popular with people across Europe and it’s been a delight to toast the achievements of a great 2013 with the best in the continent,” said MD of Festival Awards James Drury. “A huge congratulations to all the winners, and to all those finalists. It’s a great accolade to make it into the top 10, as we had hundreds of festivals take part this year.”
