Fresh off his packed discussion at the Association of Independent Festivals’ Festival Marketing seminar, LeeFest organiser Lee Denny called up the first meeting of his festival’s backers, called ‘The Campfire Cabinet’.

Made up of 160 backers, ‘The Campfire Cabinet’ met in central London last night (19 February) for the first annual general meeting to debate and vote on key decisions concerning LeeFest’s creative and financial direction.

LeeFest, which is a non-profit music and arts fest based in south London, ran a crowdfunding campaign last year on Kickstarter to grow the festival while maintaining its independence. The successful campaign raised over £50,000 from over 650 contributors around the world.

‘The Campfire Cabinet’ voted against a proposed plan to replace The Temple of Boom dance tent with a larger beach arena. Cabinet members proposed future charity partners for the festival and suggestions were heard for how to best distribute this year’s event budget.

LeeFest, started by Denny, 26, eight years ago in his back garden, takes place this year on 11-13 July.

“It’s a different way of thinking about how events are run,” said Denny of ‘The Campfire Cabinet’ meeting. “We’re continuing to grow, and instead of giving in to the demands of sponsors, we’re listening to those who know LeeFest best. They are in control!”

Cabinet member Sarah Moss said: “I’ve been going to LeeFest for the last five years. To be able to openly debate these things with the team was brilliant. I’ve got a much better idea of how it all works now.”
