London Speaker Hire brings MLA Compact to On Blackheath

London Speaker Hire (LSH) has purchased a MLA Compact System to go along with its recent investment in Martin Audio’s MLA Mini system.

The company – the AV rental division of The Hive Partnership – has added 16 MLA Compact enclosures to its inventory, and wasted no time putting the service to good use at this summer’s inaugural On Blackheath Festival.

Based in south-east London, On Blackheath’s organisers – including promoter Harvey Goldsmith – were keen to ensure that sound from headliners like Grace Jones and Massive Attack didn’t reach local residential properties.

The MLA systems had already been tested at events such as Hyde Park for AEG Live, where noise pollution jeopardises the event’s license, so LSH knew that they would work for On Blackheath.

“Initially, we didn’t have the kind of projects that warranted MLA Compact, and MLA Mini was perfect for our requirements,” said LSH director Grant Turner.

“But increasingly, this started coming up on riders. We had always said, after we saw the system at last year’s PLASA show, that we didn’t want to buy a piece of hardware, but invest in a brand,” he added.

Five MLA Compacts ran along the village tent stage (pictured), alongside other Martin Audio equipment.

“At Blackheath,” Turner continued, “we implemented the Hard Avoid preset to reduce the sound at the back of the tent and associated spillage.”

The MLA Compact was also used this year at Shambala Festival, as well as at Soccer SixFest at Mile End Stadium.
