The Days of Wine And Roses by Los Angeles four-piece The Dream Syndicate is one of the great albums of the 1980s.

A beguiling mix of melody and dissonance, the nine song set kicks off with Tell Me When It’s Over, which is like a tall Tom Verlaine/Television tune, and closes with the seven-minute title track.

The latter fuses frontman Steve Wynn’s Velvet Underground infatuation with peak/mid-1960s era Dylan, shaken with a telling measure of punk rock spirit. All this while Sonic Youth were still in short commercial trousers,

Thirty something years on, Wynn has paused his solo career to put the band back together. They land at Dingwalls, Camden Town on Friday, 24 May and judging from footage of the few shows they’ve played already, it will be the place to be ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.

“We’re doing all of Days Of Wine And Roses in [the vinyl] order, leaving a second and half between the songs,” Wynn laughs. “Someone will have to turn us over after Halloween.

“Dingwalls was the first date we played on my first ever trip to Europe,” he tells Access on the telephone. “It was mind-blowing to be in London, where so much good music came from, and we’re really looking forward to going back there.”
