Nicola MacdonaldRichmond Event Management (REM) assisted Tour of Britain organisers in managing stage seven (around 15.3km) of the race.
One of the UK’s leading cycling events, Tour of Britain saw 21 teams comprised of 121 rider compete across ten stages.
Six of Britain’s Olympic cyclists took part in the event, with this year’s race won by Steve Cummings, making him the second Brit to win the event since it rebranded in 2004.
The Bristol stage of the event took in various sites around Bristol, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and each lap included a 600m climb.
REM started work on the project in April 2016 and brought in 191 event personnel, 100 two-way radios and 1,700 red and white cones to close significant portions of road.
REM’s project director Ben Hardy commented: “Closing a road loop circuit on this scale within a city has only ever been done in London and Liverpool, so we had to create our own traffic and event management blueprints from scratch to achieve these complex closures.
“The race circuit took in some significant roads, such as The Portway, which carries approximately 40 per cent of Bristol Airport traffic, and we blocked roads passing six of Bristol’s major tourist attractions.”
Tour of Britain race director Mick Bennett added: “In 33 years of tours I have not seen a better organised stage, it has been a true pleasure coming to Bristol and working with the local team.”
