Wellpleased Events win Tour de France Grand Depart contract

Leeds-based Wellpleased Events will create the Media Centre at next month’s Tour de France Grand Depart.

The Media Centre will be in Wellington Place, in Leeds’ city centre, and will play host to some international 2,500 journalists and broadcasters. More than 800 officially branded race vehicles will also be placed there.

“The temporary structures cover a surface area of more than 5,400sqm and will provide a telecommunications and office base for every press member covering the race, so it’s no mean feat,” said Wellpleased’s operations director Simon Spikin.

It will take a week to build the Media Centre, including adding power sockets, connections and cables.

“All eyes will be on Yorkshire and the UK in July,” said Sam Welpy, owner of Wellpleased. “We want to make sure that every one of the hundreds of TV cameras capture the unique and exciting offering that Yorkshire and the UK has here.

“The amazing landscape, our warm welcome, our generosity – we want all of that to come through and as event managers, we are passionate about communicating that at every point throughout the Media Centre.”

The Grand Depart through Yorkshire, Cambridge, Essex and London takes place 5-7 July.
